Given the strength and power of new Eagles fullback/tight end/destroyer Dan Klecko, it's probably not a good idea to poke fun at the relative difficulty he had during the ages-old high-stepping drill conducted at rookie camp this week. Since Klecko hardly appears built for speed and looks as if he could deliver a knockout blow to a jeep, it was only natural that he would struggle as he navigated the ropes. He's not going to be used as a speed back, that's for sure. Instead,  he'll catch a few passes, handle short-yardage assignments and shine on special teams. Perfect.

Klecko is like most of the Eagles' newcomers who were in town this week. They won't be asked to make gigantic contributions, because that's not what this team needs. It's a veteran aggregation that requires people like Klecko, wideout DeSean Jackson, defensive tackle Trevor Laws and running back Lorenzo Booker to play roles, not become standouts. Free agent corner Asante Samuels has that responsibility. But as for the draft choices and other pickups, like Klecko and Booker, they need to become part of the support system that's part of every strong team.

Make no mistake, the Eagles are a strong team. They have a talented, experienced and (now) healthy QB. Brian Westbrook is an All-Pro running back. The O-line is solid. The defense should be better. So, when it came time for the off-season moves, there was little drama. Klecko is not expected to make a big splash -- unless he gets on the diving board at Lehigh during training camp. Okay, so a big-time wideout would be nice, but everything else seems to be in place.

That's why the Eagles didn't have an action-packed draft. They selected their usual complement of trench-warfare specialists, tried to upgrade the defensive backfield and chose Jackson, the spindly receiver whom they hope can help in the return game. Add in Klecko, Booker and a couple others, and you have a good support system. There's nothing wrong with that.

This week, the fresh faces got some individual attention and one-on-one teaching. When the veterans return to the field, most of the newcomers will fade to the background, as it should be. Aside from a big-name wide receiver, the Birds don't have gaping needs. So, look for Klecko in a supporting role. And don't worry about his footwork, because he won't be high-stepping too often this season.
